フィールド・トリップ　Field Trip in Kyoto

会員30名と京都外大の米国人留学生７名が参加し、京都での「フィールド・トリップ」を行いました。まず最初は京都で最も古い禅寺として知られる建仁寺での座禅会です。この日の京都は４月としてはとても肌寒い一日となりましたが、皆さんの集中力はその寒さを吹き飛ばすほど。留学生の中にはヨガを行っている方もいて、ご指導いただいた和尚様から座禅の姿勢を大変ほめられておりました。

昼食は祇園の「豆寅」さんにて豆寿司膳をいただきました。豆寿司とは文字通り色とりどりの小さなお寿司のこと。四角い器のふたをあけたとたん、その可愛らしさに思わず参加者から感嘆の声が上がりました。

午後は、円山公園で桜を鑑賞した後、徒歩と地下鉄でワークショップ会場へ。地下鉄の移動も特に混乱なく、道すがら留学生と歓談したりしながら、普段の旅行とは一味違う雰囲気を楽しみました。

京友禅ワークショップでは、皆さん再び卓越した集中力を発揮！素材となったハンカチーフに見本を遥かにしのぐ絵柄を染め付け、指導したワークショップスタッフを驚かせておりました。現地集合・現地解散、地下鉄の移動等、さまざまな新しい試みを取り入れたイベントとなりましたが、春の京都の一日を留学生たちと楽しく過ごしました。

 

We had a “Field Trip : Zazen-kai and Kyo-yuzen Workshop in Kyoto”, with 30 JASO members and 7 U.S. students studying at Kyoto Gaidai attended.  In the morning a Zazen-kai (or zen meditation session) was held in the Kennin-ji, the oldest zen temple in Kyoto.  Despite the very cold weather for the time of year, the attendees demonstrated an astounding degree of concentration that was enough to shake off the merciless freezing air.  Some of the American students who were regularly exercising Yoga were particularly commended by the zen priest, our instructor, for showing amazingly good Zazen posture. For lunch we had a Mame-susi-zen, a course dish comprising season’s delicacies and a collection of tiny susis at Mametora located in the beautiful Gion district.  The mame-susis that came with variations in color and ingredients were served in a beautiful wooden box.  When the lids of the boxes were opened at tables, lots of ohhing and ahhing were heard over the elegantly prepared food.

In the afternoon, after we visited the Maruyama-Park, which is famous for cherry blossoms, we moved to the kyo-yuzen workshop venue, Marumasu-Nishimuraya, on foot and by subway.

In the Kyo-yuzen workshop, the JASO attendees amazed the workshop staffs by achieving extremely high quality kyo-yuzen-zome (or traditional dying technique), excelling by far the samples provided by the shop.
